Cardiff Metro Bank Sparks Financial Education at Dinas Powys Primary School

Cardiff Metro Bank colleague Alicia Malfatti recently engaged 120 pupils from year 5 and year 6 at Dinas Powys Primary School in an enlightening Money Zone Programme. The sessions, tailored to introduce fundamental financial concepts, left the pupils equipped with valuable insights into banking, saving, and budgeting.

Money Zone is a series of financial education lessons that Metro Bank offers to children - either virtually or in store. Metro Bank has delivered its Money Zone programme to over 250,000 children in 2,900 schools.

During session 1, Alicia delved into the world of banking, explaining what a bank is, its functions and the essential skill of counting change. These insightful discussions interested the young learners, laying a solid foundation for understanding the role of financial institutions in society.

In session 2, the focus shifted to saving, emphasizing the importance of saving money, its vast uses, and the making of a saving plan. The pupils were encouraged to think critically about financial goals and responsible money management.

The final session, centred on budgeting – a crucial skill. The pupils were guided through distinguishing between needs and wants, discussed practical budgeting tips, and explored the concept of household needs versus wants. The session left the pupils with a newfound understanding of financial priorities and decision-making.

“The enthusiasm and engagement from the 120 pupils at Dinas Powys Primary School were truly inspiring,” say Cardiff Metro Bank Customer Service Representative, Alicia Malfatti. Seeing the light bulbs go off in the minds of the students as they grasp the different concepts is what makes these sessions impactful. With the right knowledge, these children are poised to make smart financial decisions when the time comes.”
